The Netherlands are very low relative to sea level. The highest point reaches 321 m, but about half of the land area is less than one meter above and about a quarter is even below sea level. There is a mild maritime climate. The Netherlands has 20 national parks and hundreds of other nature reserves. The Dutch part of the Wadden Sea is a UNESCO World Heritage Nature Site. It is home to a rich flora and fauna and many millions of birds rest during migration. With their lakes, dunes, heaths, forests and other habitats, the Netherlands offer a large number of areas that are important for biodiversity and bird protection. BirdLife International has registered more than a hundred areas as IBAs.
