Norway's landscape is shaped by the Scandinavian mountains, which reach 2469 m with their highest elevation. To the west the landscape slopes rapidly and forms the famous fjords in the sea. To the east the mountains merge into barren plateaus, the fells. The bird life is extremely rich. There are currently 40 national parks spread across the country (excluding Spitsbergen). BirdLife International has identified 80 areas in Norway that are of global importance for the bird world: IBAs (Important Bird Areas). Many are famous among bird lovers, e.g. Runde, Hardangervidda, Dovrefjell, the Lofoten Islands, the Varangerfjord or the Børgefjell. There are many species of birds to be found there that are not easy to find further south, in particular auks, gulls and ducks, but also birds of prey and owls. Norway is a pleasant country to travel to because it is highly developed, wealthy and very democratic.
