The continental part of Portugal borders the Atlantic Ocean in the west and south and is predominantly in the range of the Mediterranean climate, in the northwest there are also moderate maritime influences. It is one of the warmest countries in Europe. The highest point on the continental sector is in the Serra da Estrela at 1991 m. The Peneda-Gerês National Park is the only one in Portugal, but there are a large number of mostly small protected areas that are spread across the entire national territory. The diversity of the habitats is reflected in the number of Important Bird Areas (IBAs): BirdLife International has designated 107 areas with this qualification. It is easy to take advantage of the many birding opportunities in Portugal.
