Serbia is a landlocked country on the Balkan Peninsula in south-eastern Europe. In the north of the country the Pannonian lowlands extend, in the southern third mountains dominate with the highest elevation on the Midžor with 2169 m. The climate in the west is more Mediterranean, to the east it becomes temperate continental. Serbia has five national parks, 20 nature parks and several hundred nature reserves. This means that more than 8% of the area of Serbia is under nature protection. BirdLife International has declared around 80 areas to be IBAs (Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas), while eight wetlands are classified as internationally important according to the Ramsar Convention. Serbia is home to many native bird species due to its landscape diversity, but is also a transit area for many migratory bird species.
