Slovakia is a predominantly mountainous landlocked country in Central Europe. Two thirds of the country belong to the Carpathian Mountains. Larger lowlands are in the west (Vienna Basin) and southeast (Pannonian Plain) of the country. Not to be neglected are the hilly landscapes, especially when it comes to bird life. The altitudes range from 100 to 2655 m. The climate is generally continental-temperate and regionally largely determined by the altitude. Nature is traditionally relatively well protected in Slovakia, but the 9 national parks only take up about 6.5% of the country's area. But there are also a large number of nature reserves and bird sanctuaries. BirdLife International has classified 40 areas as IBAs (Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas). Slovakia has a good infrastructure, so that the areas of interest for bird watchers are easy to reach.
