Birds of Slovenia

Slovenia is a small country at the end of the Adriatic. Despite its small size, the country has very different landforms. The Alps in the northwest reach a height of 2864 m with the Triglav, in the northeast the landscapes merge into the Pannonian Plain, while karst areas predominate in the south. In the extreme southwest a coastal strip on the Mediterranean belongs to Slovenia. The climate in the country is correspondingly different. About 62% of the area is covered with forest. The biodiversity is one of the highest in the EU. With the designation of its Natura 2000 areas, Slovenia has placed more than 32% of the national territory under protection. In addition, Slovenia is significantly involved in the Green Belt, the largely natural border strip between the former Western and Eastern Bloc and it is located in the Blue Heart of Europe, an area that was established to protect rivers. BirdLife International has also declared 36 areas to be IBAs (Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas). It is easy to get to know the fascinating bird life of Slovenia, as this country is now a member of the European Union.
