Ukraine is the largest country whose borders are entirely within Europe. The climate is temperate, only in the extreme south there is a subtropical climate. In the southwest lies a section of the Carpathians, where the last warm temperate primeval forests in Europe are. These belong to the world natural heritage. Otherwise, three major zones can be distinguished in the territory of Ukraine. The largest swamp area in Europe lies in the north-west. To the southeast is the loess plain, which is used intensively for agriculture because of its excellent soil quality. Even further to the southeast lies the relatively dry and hot steppe zone. A large number of national parks and protected areas have been created to protect nature in Ukraine. BirdLife International has registered over 140 Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) for Ukraine. The best time for bird watching is usually from April to June.
