Belarus is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe. The highest elevation is the Dsjarschynskaja Hara with 345 m. A large part (30%) of the country is forested, other parts of the country are swampy. 25% of the country has been contaminated by the Ukrainian Chernopyl nuclear meltdown. Belarus has established 4 national parks, one of them, the Białowieża Forest, has an addition in Poland and is considered the last lowland primeval forest in Europe. There are no endemic or breeding endemic bird species in this country. Visiting Belarus is dangerous because Belarus is a dictatorship, torture is practiced in prisons and death sentences are passed. It may be enough to hold up a blank piece of paper to be arrested. On the other hand, it is less risky to get to know its bird life with the help of an interesting bird guide.
