Afghanistan is a landlocked country, two-thirds of which are difficult to access mountain regions. The highest mountains reach almost 7500 m. Nevertheless, Afghanistan has a large diversity of habitats and also a large number of endemic plants. However, the establishment of a systematic nature conservation has been hindered by the unstable political situation; so far there is only one national park (Band-e-Amir lakes near Bamiyan). The bird life is astonishingly varied in view of the difficult climatic conditions.
