Bhutan is a landlocked country on the southern slope of the eastern Himalayas. The altitudes range from the lowlands to more than 7000m. The climate varies with the elevation, from tropical to 'arctic'. Since each climate zone has its own flora and fauna, the diversity of species - including those of birds - is extraordinarily high. Moreover, environmental protection in Bhutan is perceived as exemplary. More than twelve areas are under national protection, which together make up more than 42% of the land area and are all connected by a network of corridors. Bhutan, as part of the Eastern Himalayas, is a Primary Endemic Bird Area (EBA-P) as designated by BirdLife International. This means that an area provides habitat for several bird species with a very limited range. Apart from that, there is probably something new to discover as many of the forests of Bhutan are almost untouched. In any case, the already-known avifauna of Bhutan with more than 700 species is astonishing.
