Brunei Darussalam is a small country on the north coast of Borneo, which consists of two separate parts. Most of Brunei is lowland rainforest, with mountains only in the smaller eastern part. The climate is tropical equatorial. Of particular importance is the discovery of oil in 1929, as a result of which Brunei became one of the richest countries in the world due to a small population, but ecological problems also arose. Brunei has about 39% of its area under nature protection. In the mountains in particular, bird species also occur that have a small distribution, so that the reference to an EBA (Endemic Bird Area) according to BirdLife International is justified. It can be dangerous for visitors to the country if they are not familiar with the Sharia, which is part of Brunei's legal system and may criminalize alcohol consumption or homosexuality, for example.
