Birds of Yemen

€ 8.49 *

In Yemen, an up to 3760 m high mountain range separates the narrow coastal plain from the highlands (2000 to 2500 m) inland. Somewhat isolated lies the Socotra archipelago in the Indian Ocean. The landscapes also differ in terms of the climate; so the coastal plain is humid, in the mountains the temperatures are rather pleasant, and the highlands are extremely dry. The avidiversity of Yemen is remarkably high. This is partly because of the high number of endemic species in the Socotra archipelago, which has been called 'Galapagos of the Indian Ocean', but also because of its proximity to Africa, which is only separated from Yemen by a 20 km wide Red Sea strait. In addition, the mountains host a variety of bird species that are otherwise found only in the neighboring mountains of Saudi Arabia. And, of course, many Asian birds hibernate on the Arabian peninsula or rest here on their way to Africa.
