Laos is a landlocked tropical country whose climate is dominated by monsoons. A mountain range with heights of over 2000 m covers about 90% of the country, the remaining area is a lowland in the south. The land is about 50% wooded. Avidiversity is high and two areas - Fan-Si-Pan in the north and part of southern Laos have been declared by BirdLife International to be Secondary Endemic Bird Areas (EBA-S). There are also some national parks, e.g. Nam Et-Phou Louey, which are accessible for tourists. In fact, tourism has increased dramatically in recent years. In many parts of the country, however, it is not advisable to leave the roads, as despite intensive efforts, explosives from the Vietnam War have not yet been disposed of completely. Nonetheless, in 2013 Laos won a European award as 'World Best Tourist Destination'. So it should be possible to study the fascinating birdlife of Laos.
