The Maldives is an island nation off the west coast of the Indian subcontinent with more than 1000 islands. The highest elevation reaches a height of only 2.4 m above sea level, so that the state is threatened in its continued existence by the rising sea level. The climate is tropical and warm, making the archipelago a popular tourist destination. The best travel time are the months January to April. The remarkable bird life is dominated by marine, coastal and migratory birds. In addition, there is a subspecies (maledivicus) of the House Crow that is endemic to the Maldive and Laccadive Islands.
