East Timor (Timor-Leste) is an island country on the eastern part of Timor, which is part of the Lesser Sunda Islands. East Timor is the only country in Asia that lies entirely south of the equator. The country includes an exclave (Oe-Cusse) and two small islands (Atauro and Jaco). East Timor differs from Indonesia in many ways, having been a Portuguese colony for several centuries. The highest mountain in the country is Tatamailu at 2963 m. The climate is hot tropical with pronounced rainy and dry seasons. Timor belongs to Wallacea, the biogeographical transition zone between Australia and Asia. Wallacea is an area of exceptional biodiversity. Some endemic bird species live in Timor, however they are not endemic within the national borders of East Timor. Economically, East Timor is relatively poor and the infrastructure is inadequate, so traveling there is a real adventure.
