Birds of Papua New Guinea

€ 17.99 *

Papua New Guinea is one of the seventeen countries that are considered megadivers. This is due to a combination of special landscape and climatic properties. The island state is located in the Pacific Ocean; most of it occupies the eastern half of the island of Neuguinea, the rest is distributed to numerous nearby islands and archipelagos. The altitudes range from sea level to 4509 m at Mount Wilhelm. The mountains are crossed by many deep valleys that favor an isolation of the biotopes and thus the emergence of endemism. The climate is essentially tropical, but of course also depends on the altitude, another factor that promotes the variety of species. Papua New Guinea has more than 100 endemic bird species that do not even occur in the Indonesian part of the island of Neuguinea. As a result, Birdlife has registered internationally for Papua New Guinea 13 EBAS (Endemic Bird Area), i.e. in these areas, relatively many bird species with heavily limited distribution areas. The most spectacular bird species are certainly the birds of paradise, but other families such as pigeons, parrots, bower birds, honey eaters etc. have developed very characteristic bird species in Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea is a dream destination for birds.
