Syria lies east of the Mediterranean Sea ('Levante') with a 193 km long coastline. The climate along this coast is Mediterranean, i.e. mild wet winters and hot dry summers. Inland, the landscape changes first to steppe and then to desert. Biodiversity has declined sharply over the centuries, only the birdlife is rich, as Syria is an important transit area for migratory birds.
