Turkey has more breeding bird species than any other country in the Western Palearctic. This fact is due to the wide diversity of habitats, with mountains, deserts, coasts, forests, and lakes. Turkey has about 40 national parks, which were partially established to promote tourism and recreation and partially to protect landscapes and nature. 14 areas are protected according to the Ramsar Convention. Any time of the year can be rewarding in Turkey, with April to September having the greatest variety of bird species. Of course, for spectacular raptor passage the Bosporus is excellent in September.
