Birds of Turkmenistan

€ 9.49 *

Turkmenistan is a sparsely populated desert country in Central Asia. The climate is extraordinarily continental, so that in summer the highest temperatures in Central Asia are reached. In addition, it is expected that the effects of climate change on the country's water balance will be among the most serious on earth. By far the largest part of the country is occupied by the Karakum desert. The highest mountain at 3139 m, Ayrybaba, is located on the eastern border with Uzbekistan. In the west, Turkmenistan has a coast on the Caspian Sea. The ecoregions are obviously deserts, semi-deserts, steppes and some forest landscapes. BirdLife International lists 50 IBAs (Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas) for Turkmenistan, including the Repetek Conservation Area in the south-east of the Karakum Desert, which has been protected as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1978. Many sandy desert specialists can be studied here.
