Algeria is 80% vegetation-less and dominated by the desert regions of the Sahara in the south. Only about 2% - mainly in the north - is covered by forest. Here lives also the only endemic bird, the Algerian Nuthatch. On the Mediterranean coast, of course, prevails Mediterranean climate, adjacent to the south are the mountainous regions of the Atlas. Between the Tellatlas and the Saharan Atlas, the highlands of the Schotts stretches with important wetlands. In Algeria, there are 22 national parks of varying importance. Several of them are also biosphere reserves. The country's avidiversity is very attractive to birdwatchers.
