Libya is the fourth largest country in Africa and is divided into an eastern and a western part. The narrow coastal region has a Mediterranean climate, while the vast majority of the country (85%) is occupied by the Sahara. There is a hot, almost rainless desert climate with temperatures reaching almost 60°C. There are no rivers that carry water all year round, only underground are large reserves of fresh water. On the border with Chad is the country's highest mountain, the Bikku Bitti, at 2267 m. There are seven national parks (partly under the protection of the Ramsar Convention) and five nature reserves, but their protection is limited. BirdLife International has recognized nine IBAs (Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas) for Libya, most of which are on the Mediterranean coast. The potential for ecotourism is still undeveloped.
