Birds of Mauritania

€ 8.49 *

Mauritania is a West African country belonging to the Arab world. It has a long coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. 90% of the country lies in the Sahara, the remaining parts are assigned to the Sahel. In general, Mauritania is a flat country with some prominent inselbergs. The highest elevation, the Kediet Ijill, reaches 915 m. The bird life is dominated by migratory birds from the north who winter here. There are two national parks, both near the coast. The Banc d'Arguinist National Park has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as an important wintering area. Diawling National Park is Ramsar territory and is located in the delta of the Senegal River. BirdLife International has designated a total of more than 20 IBAs (Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas) for Mauritania. Tourism is struggling for a variety of reasons. It makes one think that slavery only became a criminal offense in 2007 and that the first peaceful transfer of power since independence took place in 2019.
