Nigeria is the most populous country and at the same time the economically strongest country in Africa. It is located in West Africa on the Atlantic Ocean. The most important river is the eponymous Niger, which flows into the Gulf of Guinea in the vast Niger Delta. The climate is determined by two climate zones. The south has a hot, humid climate with a pronounced rainy season in summer, while the north has a desert climate with less precipitation and higher temperatures. In the coastal strip there are important lagoons and mangrove swamps. This is followed by a strip of secondary forest that has largely replaced the earlier rainforest. Further to the north is a zone of wet savannah (of the Sudan), and still further to the north a zone of dry savannah (of the Sahel). The diversity of landscapes has resulted in a rich fauna. Nigeria protects its nature by establishing eight national parks and many other protected areas. In addition, eleven protected areas have been designated as wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. In fact, the coastal regions of Nigeria are among the most biodiverse ecosystems on earth. BirdLife International also designates two areas as EBAs (endemic bird areas); in addition, Nigeria shares two other EBAs with its neighboring countries. The 27 IBAs (Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas) that BirdLife International has registered for Nigeria also show how important Nigeria is for bird life.
