South Sudan is a landlocked country in East Africa. It is covered by tropical forest, swamps and savannas. At 3187 m, the country reaches its highest elevation in the Imatong Mountains. The climate is tropical-humid with a rainy season from April to October. The most important river is the White Nile, which flows through the country from south to north and creates one of the largest swamps in the world in the Sudd. South Sudan has no endemic bird species, but BirdLife International designates 12 areas as IBA (Important Bird and Biodiversity Area). South Sudan, a very young country, protects its nature with 6 national parks. South Sudan is one of the poorest countries in the world and the infrastructure is correspondingly weak.
