Western Sahara is located on the Atlantic coast of Northwest Africa. With the exception of a few oases and gueltas, the landscapes are dry and the climate is desert. In view of the hostile conditions, it is amazing how many bird species can be found in Western Sahara. Passing migratory birds make a significant contribution to this. There are no endemic bird species here. Western Sahara's independence is disputed; about two-thirds of the territory is held by Morocco. In recent years, after the end of the armistice, fighting has flared up again.
