Birds of Belize

Belize protects a greater proportion of its land area than any other country. More than 40 % are declared as National parks. In contrast to all neighbouring countries, Belize exhibits relatively little altitudinal variation. Nevertheless, there is a considerable variety of habitat types, including a system of small islands and cayes. Belize has no endemics, but shares a number of species endemic to Yucatán Peninsula with Mexico and Guatemala. Late winter, when many North American migrants are present and rainfall is low, is the most popular time to visit Belize for bird watching.

The scientific system follows Clements et al. 2017.
