Costa Rica is one of the most popular destinations for visiting birdwatchers in the world. The mountainous tropical country is home to a very rich fauna and flora. The "summer" or dry season goes from December to April. Around 25% of the country's land area is protected in 28 national parks and other protected areas, the largest percentage of protected areas in the world. One of them, Cocos Island, is located in the Pacific Ocean, approximately 550 km from the shore of Costa Rica. It is not only a National Park, but also a World Heritage Site and Ramsar Wetland. Other outstanding reserves on the mainland are Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, Corcovado National Park, and Tortuguero National Park, each with several hundred identified bird species. In all of Costa Rica over 840 species of birds have been found.
