Birds of Grenada

Grenada is the southernmost of the Lesser Antilles. The island is extremely mountainous and reaches an altitude of 840 m (Mount St. Catherine). The Grenada Dove is the national bird of Grenada, here endemic and the rarest pigeon on earth. In addition, there are some subspecies that only occur here. If you also take the environment into consideration, here live some other species of birds that stand out because they are restricted to the Lesser Antilles. For this reason, BirdLife International has recognized Grenada as part of a Primary Endemic Bird Area (EBA-P). Since the soil of Grenada is very fertile, most of the land is used for agriculture and less than 10% of the area is still wooded. These are the steepest and highest lying areas and there are the most interesting bird species. Birdwatching on Grenada can be exhausting, but at least the island is not so affected by hurricanes because of its peripheral location on the hurricane belt. And Grenada offers the adventurous birdwatcher breathtaking landscapes with beautiful waterfalls.
