Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world and covers about half of the South American continent. Brazil is the only country on earth through which both the equator and the Tropic of Capricorn run. The highest peak is the Pico da Neblina (2994 m). Because of the many climatic zones (desert, equatorial, tropical, semiarid, oceanic and subtropical), Brazil has the greatest biodiversity on earth and is therefore one of the 17 megadiverse countries on earth. With more than 70 national parks, Brazil has the highest number in South America, but their protective effect is dubious. The bird life is incredible, but the overexploitation of nature is endangering the beauties of Brazil. The Amazon Basin (Bacia do rio Amazonas) is the most water-rich river system on earth and is covered by rainforest to a decreasing extent. The much smaller Atlantic Rainforest (Mata Atlântica), which is separated from the Amazon Rainforest, stretches along the east coast of South America. Its biodiversity is one of the highest in the world, yet it is one of the most threatened tropical forests today. Significantly more than 200 bird species are endemic to Brazil, so they cannot be observed anywhere else in the wild.
