Paraguay is a landlocked country in South America. It is traversed by the Rio Paraguay from north to south and divided into two clearly distinguishable geographical regions. The Western Region (Región Occidental), also known as the Chaco, consists of rather arid plains, while the Eastern Region (Región Oriental) has more grassy and forested hills. The climate is tropical to subtropical. In Paraguay, only dry seasons and rainy seasons alternate. Several national parks and many protected areas have been established to protect nature, most of which are located in the western part of the country. In addition, BirdLife International has identified more than 50 areas of Paraguay as IBAs (Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas). The bird life is extremely rich with more than 700 bird species. Although Paraguay is a developing country, bus service works well on the mostly paved roads, so tourism can also increase. Paraguay became the first South American country to eradicate malaria in 2018.
