Suriname is one of the smallest countries in South America. Behind a narrow plain on the Atlantic coast, the country rises to a plateau that belongs to the mountainous region of Guiana. There are three extensive mountains on this plateau, the highest of which reaches 1280 m. The climate is tropical and most of the country is covered by rainforest. It is therefore not surprising that despite its small size, Suriname is home to an excellent variety of birds with more than 700 species. The Surinam rainforest is of course part of the large Amazon rainforest area, but BirdLife International has identified two of its own IBAs (Important Bird Areas): 'Central Suriname Nature Reserve' and 'North-West Suriname'. A visit to Suriname is certainly a rich bird watching experience.
