Kiribati is located at the intersection of the geographic date line (180°) and the equator. Although it consists of only 32 atolls and one island (elevated atoll), its extension of over 35,000,000 km² makes it one of the largest countries on earth. Its highest point is currently only 81 m above sea level, so this state will inevitably cease to exist within this century due to flooding. The atolls are divided into three archipelagos. The endemic Bokikokiko occurs on two of the atolls (Kiritimati and Teraina) of the eastern archipelago, the Line Islands. Another endemic bird, the Kirimati Sandpiper, has already gone extinct. The middle archipelago is a World Heritage Site. With the exception of one, these atolls are uninhabited, but are home to large colonies of sea birds. Kiribati is considered one of the least developed countries in the world. nevertheless, it seems possible and attractive to travel there as a tourist.
