Nauru is the smallest republic in the world. It consists of a single island in the Pacific a few kilometers south of the equator. It is an elevated atoll on top of a submarine volcano. The climate is balanced hot and humid. Nauru is one of the few islands with extremely rich deposits of calcium phosphate (nauruit=petrified guano); the mining of this material has dramatically affected the nature of the island. It made Nauru one of the richest countries in the world and at the same time made large parts of the island uninhabitable. The diversity of flora and fauna has also been largely destroyed and the population suffers from significant health problems. Few bird species remain on Nauru, including a surprisingly endemic species, the Nauru Reed Warbler. The majority are made up of seabirds.
