Ireland is an island nation in the Atlantic and one of the least forested countries in Europe; only 10% of the area is woodland. The landscape is mostly flat or hilly, with the highest elevation at 1039 m on Carrauntoohil in the south-west of the country. The climate is oceanic with a great influence of the warm Gulf Stream. Ireland is visited by many waders, geese and ducks for wintering. On offshore islands like Kerry Islands you can find breeding colonies of tube-nosed birds and other sea birds. BirdLife International has classified over a hundred areas in Ireland as IBAs (Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas). However, the six national parks established by Ireland take up less than 1% of the land area. Ireland is now a wealthy country with a good infrastructure that makes traveling around the country a lot easier.
