With its predominant Mediterranean climate, Portugal is one of the warmest countries in Europe. Portugal also includes the volcanic island groups of Madeira and the Azores; The highest elevation is Ponta do Pico in the Azores at 2351 m. On the mainland there is only one national park (Peneda-Gerês), but relatively many small nature reserves. The islands are also of great importance for bird life. BirdLife International has recognized more than 100 areas as IBAs (Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas). In addition, several bird species on the islands have relatively small distribution areas, which has also been noted by BirdLife International with the registration of several EBAs (Endemic Bird Areas). Portugal is one of the most interesting countries for bird watchers in Europe.
