Peru is one of the 17 megadiverse countries. It is located in western South America on the Pacific Ocean and reaches an altitude of 6768 m asl in the Andes. In the north, Peru reaches up to 4 km from the equator. On the border with Bolivia in the south lies Lake Titikaka, the largest lake in South America. East of the Andes is a jungle region (selva), the Amazon rainforest, which covers 60% of the country's surface. The geographical conditions lead to a great variety of climates. With more than 1800 bird species, Peru is considered the country with the greatest diversity of birds, more than Europe and North America combined. More than 100 of these are endemic to Peru. 17.3% of the country's area has been placed under protection, including 15 national parks. The most important of them is the Manu National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is probably the most interesting park on earth for bird watchers.
