Greenland, the largest island in the world, lies for the most part beyond the Arctic Circle. Therefore there is a polar and sub-polar climate. Essentially only the coastal strips are ice-free, they have tundra vegetation. The bird world is remarkably rich in species. BirdLife International has identified 55 IBAs (Important Bird Areas) in Greenland. Seabirds from the Auk family in particular breed in huge colonies on the coast of Greenland.
Legally Greenland belongs to Denmark.
