Birds of Svalbard

€ 3.49 *

Svalbard is an archipelago on the southern edge of the Arctic Sea and politically belongs to Norway; the main island of the archipelago is called Spitsbergen. The archipelago consists of more than 400 islands and skerries. In summer, Svalbard is usually ice-free because of the Gulf Stream, but even in winter the fjords don't completely freeze over. The bird life on Spitsbergen is relatively poor in species and even fewer bird species breed here, including in particular the auks, which breed here in huge colonies. BirdLife International recognizes 16 IBAs (Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas) on the archipelago. Tourism takes place mainly in the summer from cruise ships that offer shore excursions.

Svalbard is located in the Arctic Ocean. Legally Svalbard belongs to Norway.
