Birds of the British Indian Ocean Territory

The British Indian Ocean Territory currently includes the Chagos Archipelago and is located about 500 km south of the Maldives and therefore south of the equator. Together with the Maldives and India's Lakshadweep, it forms the largest atoll and coral reef system in the world. The climate is tropical, humid and warm. The islands have outstanding biodiversity and are home to huge seabird colonies, including the world's largest colony of red-footed boobies. The land birds, on the other hand, are largely introduced.
