Birds of the Nicobar Islands

€ 5.99 *

The Nicobar archipelago consists of 24 islands in the Bay of Bengal between the Andaman Islands and Sumatra. The highest elevation is reached at Mount Thuilliet at 642 m. The climate is tropical warm and the vegetation is predominantly evergreen rainforest and mangrove. Because of the high level of endemism, some attempts have been made to protect nature, although with limited success. On Great Nicobar, 85% of the area has been designated as a UNESCO biosphere reserve. However, strictly protected areas are too few and too small to ensure the survival of the endangered species. The Nicobar Islands are inaccessible to tourists.

The Nicobar Islands are located in the Indian Ocean. Legally the Nicobar Islands belong to India. Because of the number of bird species with restricted range occurring in this area, BirdLife International assigned it a Primary Endemic Bird Area (EBA-P).
