Gough Island is practically in the middle of the South Atlantic. It is volcanic and reaches a height of 910 m above sea level (Edinburgh Peak). The island is uninhabited apart from a weather station. The climate is naturally oceanic and is dominated by strong westerly winds all year round. Along with Inaccessible Island, Gough Island is a World Heritage site for many reasons, including being home to almost half of the world's population of northern rockhopper penguins, huge colonies of seabirds and several endemic land bird species.
Gough Island is located in the Atlantic Ocean. Legally Gough Island belongs to United Kingdom. Because of the number of bird species with restricted range occurring in this area, BirdLife International assigned it a Primary Endemic Bird Area (EBA-P).
