Birds of the Kerguelen Islands

€ 1.99 *

The Keguelen islands are a volcanic archipelago in the southern Indian Ocean. It consists of around 400 islands, but most of the land area - more than 90% - is on the main island of Grande Terre. The highest mountain is also located there, the Grand Ross at 1850 m above sea level. The climate is cool temperate and corresponds to that of the south coast of Iceland. There are storms for almost half of the year. The bird population is estimated at 10 to 20 million individuals. The birdlife is dominated by maritime bird species, including an endemic species of cormorant. Since there is no airstrip, the islands can only be reached by water.

The Kerguelen Islands are located in the Indian Ocean. Legally the Kerguelen Islands belong to France.
