Die Jungferninseln liegen zwischen Puerto Rico und Anguilla in der Karibik, der amerikanische Teil liegt am weitesten im mittleren Bereich zwischen dem britischen Teil und dem sog. spanischen Anteil, der tatsächlich zu Puerto Rico gehört. Die Hauptinseln sind St. Croix, St. John und St. Thomas. Wegen des vulkanischen Charakters der Inseln ist die Landschaft gebirgig, der höchste Punkt ist der Crown Mountain bei 474 m üdM. Das Klima ist subtropisch, und es treten regelmäßig Wirbelstürme auf. Es gibt einen Nationalpark, der St. John und die Insel Hassel vor der totalen Kommerzialisierung schützen soll. Die ursprüngliche Vegetation wurde in letzten Jahrhunderten auf den größeren Inseln nahezu vollständig abgeholzt. Auf den ca. 30 kleineren Inseln hat sich dennoch eine interessante Vogelwelt erhalten. Heute ist der Tourismus die wichtigste Einnahmequelle.
