The island is part of the volcanic archipelago of San Andrés and Providencia off the coast of Nicaragua in the Caribbean Sea and is Colombian territory. The mountain range inland rises to only 55 m above sea level. The climate is tropical warm with a short dry season from February to May. Hurricanes occasionally occur. Many migratory birds from North America can be observed on San Andrés, and an endemic and endangered vireo also occurs here.
San Andrés is located in the Atlantic Ocean. Legally San Andrés belongs to Colombia. Because of the number of bird species with restricted range occurring in this area, BirdLife International assigned it a Secondary Endemic Bird Area (EBA-S).
