Birds of the Falkland Islands

The Falkland Islands are an archipelago with around 200 islands in the southern Atlantic. They are located almost 400 km east of southern Argentina. The vegetation is reminiscent of tundra, but the climate is milder and there is no permafrost. Mount Usborne on Eastern Falkland is the highest elevation, reaching little more than 700m. There are penguin colonies on the coasts, which can include several million birds. There are only two endemic bird species, the Falkland Steamer Duck and the Cobb's Wren, but numerous endemic subspecies. According to BirdLife International, the Falkland Islands form a large primary endemic bird area (EBA-P) with southern Patagonia, i.e. here live relatively many species of birds with a small distribution range.

The Falkland Islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean. Legally the Falkland Islands belong to United Kingdom. Because of the number of bird species with restricted range occurring in this area, BirdLife International assigned it a Primary Endemic Bird Area (EBA-P).
