The island of Niue is one of the largest raised atolls on earth, it represents the top of an extinct volcano and is often just called "The Rock". The central plateau reaches an altitude of 69 m asl. The climate is tropical with south-easterly winds and occasional cyclones. The bird life is of course dominated by pelagic bird species. There are no endemic bird species, but there are endemic bird subspecies: ssp. whitmeei of the Polynesian Triller and ssp. brunnescens of the Polynesian Starling.
Niue island is located in the Pacific Ocean. Legally Niue island belongs to Niue.
