Birds of Bonaire

€ 5.49 *

The island of Bonaire is located off the coast of Venezuela in the Caribbean Sea and belongs geologically to South America. It lies outside the hurricane alley and there is a tropical maritime climate. The coast of Bonaire has many lagoons and wetlands, which is an excellent habitat for shorebirds. Washington Slagbaai National Park is an IBA (Important Bird Area), according to BirdLife International. Although there are no endemic bird species on Bonaire, there are two endemic subspecies, a Brown-throated Parakeet and a Bananaquit. Together with the other Netherlands Antilles (Aruba and Curaçao), Bonaire forms an EBA-S (Secondary Endemic Bird Area) because there live some bird species with restricted range in this area.

Bonaire is located in the Atlantic Ocean. Legally Bonaire belongs to Netherlands. Because of the number of bird species with restricted range occurring in this area, BirdLife International assigned it a Secondary Endemic Bird Area (EBA-S).
