The Cocos (Keeling) Islands are formed by two atolls. The southern atoll consists of 26 islands, which are uninhabited except for Home Island. The northern atoll consists of a single island and is protected as an Australian national park. Numerous seabird species occur there, some of which have formed very important breeding colonies. An endemic subspecies (andrewsi) of the Buff-banded Rail also lives here.
The Cocos (Keeling) Islands are located in the Indian Ocean. Legally the Cocos (Keeling) Islands belong to Australia.
