Birds of the Pitcairn Islands

€ 2.49 *

The Pitcairn Islands are four volcanic islands or atolls in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. The climate is humid subtropical. The highest elevation is on the island of Pitcairn at 347 m above sea level. The elevated Henderson Atoll has the largest area, is uninhabited but is home to four endemic bird species. The eponymous volcanic island of Pitcairn is significantly smaller, is the only inhabited island and has an endemic bird species. The Pitcairn Islands are difficult to access, requiring permission to enter, and cruise ships are often content with circumnavigating the main island.

The Pitcairn Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean. Legally the Pitcairn Islands belong to United Kingdom. Because of the number of bird species with restricted range occurring in this area, BirdLife International assigned it a Secondary Endemic Bird Area (EBA-S).
