The Midway Islands - the "backbone of heaven" in Hawaiian - belong to an atoll in the far northwest of the Hawaiian archipelago. A large portion is occupied by the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. Although the islands are technically outside the tropics, they have a tropical savannah climate. The Midway Islands are home to the breeding grounds of numerous seabirds, including those of more than 60% of all Laysan albatrosses and more than 30% of all black-footed albatrosses. The organization of visiting programs was ended in 2013.
The Midway Atoll are located in the Pacific Ocean. Legally the Midway Atoll belong to USA.
